open stick dribble hockey skills

  • Dribble straight when you have open space without opponents to move in. Try to keep an open stance when you have more room. The farther out from your feet the ball is, the faster you can run. This does not, however, work well with opponents that are close to you.

  • Move the inverted "V" grip of your left hand on your stick a little to the right. This shift will make the shift to the reverse stick position easier if you find you need to change the direction you are hitting the ball.

  • Keep your hands well apart on the stick - but if you get them too far apart, you will have to bend over too far and won't be able to keep an eye on the field of play.

  • Try to keep your back straight and head up with your weight balanced by positioning your feet correctly to enable you to change direction easily.

  • Cradle the ball in the toe of your stick, moving it where you want it to go while advancing up the field.

  • I would rate myself a 10 out of 10 for this skill as it was my best skill out of all of them.

    Slap Shot

there are many different things you need to include when taking a slap shot in hockey
Skate to within a reasonable shooting distance from the goal.

  • Position your body sideways to the net and in a normal passing stance - skates parallel, knees bent, back bent forward, stick extended, blade edge flat on the ice (or roller rink) and puck cradled in the center of the blade.

  • Raise the stick up and straight back until your bottom hand is at shoulder level.

  • Keep your bottom arm straight.

  • Shift your weight to the back foot.

  • Raise your eyes, and mark the desired target (an open edge of the gop]al, not an opponent's helmet).

  • Bring the stick aggressively forward: Pull with your top hand, push with the bottom hand.

  • Transfer your weight to the front foot.

  • Strike the puck on its bottom edge.

  • reverse stick tackle

Backhand hitTo practice this skill in pairs.
One of the players passes the ball towards the reverse stick side of the other player this player tries to block the ball to the forehand side with one touch (flat stick on the ground) and passes the ball back
then the player with the ball runs towards the defender and the defender will perform a reverse stick tackle being sure to keep the stick low to the ground and there hands in the correct position.
defender runns away with the ball and the roles reversed.
This is one of my average skills i was ok at the reverse stick tackcle i would give myself a 7/10 rating.

    open stick tackle

keep your body in a strong low body position and balanced ready to move keep your left foot forward and your right foot back. The stick should be on the ground or hovering slightly above the ground then position your feet and stick to make a strong triangle shaped base.  The tackle must be positive and strong with your feet balanced. The stick face angled towards the ball ,the tackle should be timed at the right moment initiated by a jab to put player off or as player looses control. however be careful because the defender could be injured by the attacker as the head is down too low and the attacker could take advantage of this over commitment to his/her tackle. Flat stick only when attacker stationary or moving very slowly. I have gave myself a 9 out of 10 rating for this skill, as it is one of my better skills.

    hockey skills reciving the ball

When reciving the ball from another player you should get your stick down as early as possible, also bend your knees not just your waist. Your left hand should be at the top of the stick and the right hand should be futher down.bend your knees and obsorb the ball againest the stick making sure the stick is in front of your right foot. your body should be in line with the ball as it aproches you although in a game it is not always possible. you may need to angle your stick to get better control of the ball. the is very important in a game , because if you can keep control of your ball then you have an advantage of being able to react faster than your oppnent.
This skill is one of my better skills therefore I believe out of 10 I would rate myself a 9 as this is one of my best qulities.

    24/09/10 Hockey push pass

During this session we learnt how to perform the push pass technique. This is the easiest method of passing the ball, as the position of your hands on the stick is the same as when running with the ball. The perfect stance you must have when carrying out this skill is the sideways stance. With the feet placed shoulder width apart, leaning forward with knees slightly bent. And the ball is positioned in front of the body on level with the back right foot.
Our coach told us to stand 10 meters apart, then we practised the push pass to each other for 10 minutes this improved our skills in this technique. We then increased the distance between each other and made gates that we had to get it though the gates to score one point. I have rated myself about 8 out of 10 for this skil.
